Understanding Vasectomy
In Auckland
The Cooper Clinic is a leading vasectomy provider in Auckland Central, North Shore, East and South Auckland and Pukekohe.
A vasectomy is a permanent surgical procedure that stops a sperm’s journey. It works by blocking or severing the vas deferens (tubes carrying sperm), preventing sperm from mixing with seminal fluid. This leads to an almost zero possibility of pregnancy while keeping your sexual drive and intimacy unaffected.
At The Cooper Clinic in Auckland, we use the medically advanced, minimally invasive no-scalpel vasectomy method. This means you can get back to your regular activities and work sooner!
The Benefits Of Choosing A Vasectomy
A vasectomy is the most effective method of permanent birth control for males. There are many benefits:
- A safe and effective method
- Success rates of 99%
- A permanent solution, freeing you from ongoing hormonal treatments or medications
- No adverse effects on a man’s sex drive or performance, pleasure, or satisfaction – vasectomies do not affect erections, orgasms, or ejaculation
- We utilise cutting-edge no-scalpel method for a less invasive experience, quicker recovery, and reduced tissue damage compared to traditional methods.

What Is The Cost Of A Vasectomy In Auckland?
At Cooper Clinic, we stand by the principle that top-notch care should be financially accessible. We’re committed to clear and reasonable pricing for our services. The cost of a vasectomy in Auckland at our clinic is:
- Vasectomy With Local Anaesthetic: $695
- Vasectomy With IV Sedation: $1,095
Furthermore, your insurance provider might cover the cost of a vasectomy, subject to their terms and conditions.
The Cooper Clinic Technique
The Cooper Clinic specialises in the novel no-scalpel method. We first administer local anaesthetic to numb the scrotum, then use a special electrosurgical device specifically designed for office procedures. This specialised device makes a small puncture to access the vas deferens, followed by the cutting of the vas deferens. This minimally invasive technique leads to faster recovery, reduced discomfort, and fewer complications.

Is A Vasectomy The Right Choice For Me?
Deciding to have a vasectomy is not one that should be entered lightly, as a vasectomy reversal is not always possible. We strongly recommend you discuss the procedure with your partner and come to a mutual decision.
A vasectomy could be the right step if:
- You and your partner believe you have completed your family
- You seek a dependable, lasting solution for birth control
- Non-surgical or hormonal birth control methods are unsuitable for you or your partner
We welcome you to reach out to us for a discussion on whether a vasectomy suits your needs.
What Does A Vasectomy
In Auckland Involve?
1. Preparation
- Avoid NSAIDs like Ibuprofen before and on the day of the procedure
- No alcohol consumption the day before your vasectomy
- Shower warmly on the day of the procedure
- Wear snug underwear; avoid boxers
- Shave the pubic area on the morning of the procedure
- Have an ice pack ready in your car
2. The no-scalpel technique
- A local anaesthetic will be administered to numb the scrotum area
- A precise puncture is made with an electrosurgical device to reach the vas deferens
- The vas deferens are gently pulled through the puncture
- The tubes are then severed and closed off either by heat or tying
- Afterwards, the tubes are placed back into the scrotum
- The tiny incision typically heals swiftly, often without the need for stitches
3. Recovery and aftercare
- Utilise ice packs to minimise any post-surgery swelling
- Take the clinic-provided pain relief as directed
- You may be able to resume work the following day, depending on the nature of your job
- For physically demanding jobs (such as ones that require heavy lifting), a week's rest is advised, with only light work duties for the following week
- Avoid strenuous physical activities, heavy lifting and contact sports for a few weeks
- Refrain from ejaculation for a week
- Continue with an alternative form of birth control for 12 weeks after your surgery
- A follow-up semen test will be conducted after three months to confirm the absence of sperm

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I ask my GP for a vasectomy?
Yes, you can discuss a vasectomy with your General Practitioner (GP). They can provide initial advice, answer your questions, and then either perform a vasectomy in their doctor’s surgery or refer you to The Cooper Clinic. Our clinic is one of the leading vasectomy providers in Auckland, hence is a preferred choice for many.
Is a successful vasectomy guaranteed?
While vasectomies are highly effective and one of the most reliable forms of contraception, no method is 100% foolproof. The success rate of vasectomies in preventing pregnancy is over 99%, but there’s a small chance of failure. The Cooper Clinic offers a free re-do vasectomy if two repeat semen analysis tests still show live sperm cells.
What are the possible complications?
Although rare, complications can occur with a vasectomy. These might include infection, bleeding or bruising at the surgical site, mild pain or discomfort, and in rare cases, chronic pain. There’s also a small risk of sperm granuloma (a lump caused by leaking sperm) and inflammation. There are currently no known long-term health risks or direct links to prostate cancer.
Is the vasectomy reversible?
Technically, it is possible to have a vasectomy reversal procedure. However, vasectomy should be considered a permanent form of contraception because the reversal isn’t always successful, and the likelihood of success decreases as time passes after the original vasectomy.
Does a vasectomy affect my sex drive or ejaculation?
A vasectomy does not affect your sex drive (libido) or your ability to ejaculate. The only difference is that the semen will not contain sperm. Men typically find no change in their sexual function, satisfaction, or pleasure following a vasectomy.
